Exhibits confiscated at Hanoi Station in April 2017

Nguyen Mau Chien is known as the leader of the transnational wildlife trade chain from Africa to Vietnam. In 2007, Nguyen Mau Chien was arrested and fined in Tanzania for illegally transporting wildlife. This subject has long been suspected of being involved in a series of illegal tiger trade and "legalizing" tigers of illegal origin through its captive facility in Thanh Hoa in recent years. . In particular, Chien's line is suspected to have expanded significantly in Africa, focusing primarily on rhino horn, ivory and pangolin scales over the past five years. The arrest of Nguyen Mau Chien in April 2017 marks the first time a suspect has led a cross-border wildlife trade line in Vietnam and is considered a breakthrough of Vietnam. in preventing the activities of buying, selling and consuming products from wildlife.

The arrest occurred in the context of the 17th CITES Member States Conference (COP17) in October 2016 that decided to set up a monitoring mission of the CITES Secretariat to Vietnam to re-evaluate efforts. of Vietnam in preventing illegal trafficking and transportation of rhino horn. During his mission to Vietnam in September 2017, CITES Secretariat, along with law enforcement and judicial agencies, reviewed the arrest, prosecution, prosecution, and criminal prosecution rates. rhino horn in Vietnam, so it is recommended that Vietnam not only needs to intensify the destruction of the activities of criminal groups on wildlife, successfully arrest the offenders, especially the "tycoons" of trade. , but also must attempt to prosecute, adjudicate and impose severe penalties on these subjects

Ms. Bui Thi Ha, Deputy Director of the Natural Education Center (ENV) shared: “This is an opportunity for Vietnam to turn its commitment into practical actions to eliminate illegal trading networks. , as well as efforts to enforce wildlife crime laws. The whole world is watching Vietnam in this case. ”

In the letter, 16 organizations also expressed confidence that a right and correct sentence will be given to the defendants in the upcoming trial in Ha Dong District People's Court. This sentence is not only meant to deter detainees and those who have been trying to make illicit riches from illegal wildlife trade and transportation, but also show the determination of Vietnam. in the fight against this type of crime, thereby enhancing Vietnam's position and image in the international arena.

The organizations also pledged to join hands to support Vietnam's efforts in the fight against illegal wildlife trade.
